The winter transfer window has closed and Manchester City have done less business than many had envisaged. The thoughts of the staff, players and fans alike will now be concentrated on the ultimate feat of knocking Manchester United off their perch in the English Premier League.
Despite what some would call a season of ups and downs so far – Manchester City have developed into a far more exciting side this year but have also been knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage – if they manage to win the Premier League, the season would have to be viewed as a massive success.
Beyond that there is talk of Manchester City’s owners exercising more prudence in the transfer market this summer after a crazy few years in which £500 million has been spent on bringing the team to a level where it can compete with Europe’s elite. But you can be sure that there will be a couple of marquee signings in the summer to put the icing on an already sumptuous cake. So how can Manchester City actually improve? Here are a some suggestions on players that could remove any tiny remaining chinks in the Manchester City armour.
A centre back
Vincent Kompany has marshalled the defence superbly this year and has been ably assisted by players like Joleon Lescott, Stefan Savic and Kolo Toure at different times. But Kompany’s recent suspension exposed a lack of top class cover in that position and a club of Manchester City’s finances will surely look to address this in the summer. If City are looking for a top drawer player with something a bit special then how about Thiago Silva of AC Milan (Above)?
A left back
Kolarov has a fine left foot and Clichy has been ok. Lescott can also play there so City aren’t exactly desperate in this area. But noone has really cemented the position and made it their own. How about a man of real authority and versatility? Two-footed Germany captain Philipp Lahm.

A left winger
Sooner or later Gareth Barry will be squeezed out of the midfield. With Nasri, Silva, Johnson, Milner, Toure and others vying for the midfield births in Mancini’s regularly narrow formation, the boss may just look to add a left-footed midfield/offensive player. Ok, even Manchester City may struggle to prise the magician that is Lionel Messi from his spiritual home at Barcelona. But they might instead attempt to make this chap (below) the best paid player in The Premier League. Noone’s going to tell them they can’t afford him!

It’s the stuff of pure fantasy for virtually every other team in the world. But Manchester City fans continue to live the dream and expect more sensational summer signings….
