Battle Royal for young Spaniard

Manchester United are desperate to bolster their midfield and the latest reports suggest that David Moyes has had his coaching staff on overtime in order to scout some of Europe’s finest. With so many names being thrown into the hat on a daily basis it’s almost impossible to decant the myth from the truth.

What we do know is that Phil Neville has been in Spain to run the rule over some midfielders from La Liga. The Telegraph today suggests that Manchester United will go head-to-head with Arsenal and Chelsea in an attempt to sign a 19-year-old Atletico Madrid midfielder.

The Telegraph last night reported:

Manchester United’s search to bolster their midfield took a new twist after coach Phil Neville was spotted scouting Spain under-21 international Saúl Ñíguez in action for Rayo Vallecano against Getafe on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, on loan at Rayo from Atlético Madrid, is believed to be a target of Arsenal and Chelsea, who also sent a scout to watch him in action against Getafe.

While Arsenal and Chelsea could well be interested in the youngster Manchester United’s need for a midfielder is surely the greatest of the three teams.

Chelsea have today been linked with a big money move for their old player Nemanja Matic, while Arsenal seem particularly well set up in that area of the park.

As for Manchester United, well they are desperate to add quality and numbers to the engine room. Niguez trained as a youth with Real Madrid before joining Atletico at the age of 14. He’s raised eyebrows with some brilliant performances whilst out on loan this season at Rayo Vallecano. The fact that, whilst at the club, he has also been deployed at centre back tells you that he is more of a defensive midfielder than a creator.

With Chelsea in for Matic you would imagine that their desire to sign Niguez would be less intense.

His agent alluded to the idea that a move is feasible:

“Atlético are a selling club. They have sold Fernando Torres, Sergio Agüero, and David de Gea. Another matter is whether a club is willing to come in and make an offer.”

Let’s see the lad in action.
