Where will Liverpool finish? Season predictions

No Dull Moments

The last six months have been a real rollercoaster for fans of Liverpool football club.

They have enjoyed some genuine highs. But it’s also been a troubled period for other reasons.

We do feel that Brendan Rodgers is taking Liverpool forward but they were so close to winning the league last season and you wonder whether they’ll get as good a chance again in the near future.

To labour a painful point for a moment, with three games to go, Liverpool were five points clear and we thought that they were nailed on to win their first league title in a quarter of a century.

But the departure of Luis Suarez this summer has raised serious questions as to whether the team can progress again this term.

On the positive side, Liverpool were the most attractive team in the league last season and do have a tangible reward – namely a return to The Champions League – which not only brings great revenue but marvellous excitement. We can’t wait to see Anfield rocking again on those momentous midweek evenings.

Liverpool have also bought some genuinely exciting players to the club.

Rodgers has arguably done the right thing in investing long-term rather than going for quick hits in the transfer market.

It’s entirely realistic to project that players like Lazar Markovic and Emre Can could be seen as the cream of Europe over the next few years.

There is of course still time left in the transfer window, but Liverpool may now turn their attention to solidifying the defence with the remaining time before September. Lovren has come in for big money but one or two full backs would be nice.

And we would not be at all surprised to see an additional striker join Liverpool also. We were a little surprised and disappointed to see Divock Origi go straight back out on loan, after giving such mature and technically adroit displays in The World Cup. We think he could have been a real star at Anfield this season.

Whilst we are expecting to see a similarly enjoyable and attacking brand of football at the club this season we just feel that it’s impossible to replace Suarez and Liverpool may be taken a step backwards in order to progress in the next few years.

So we expect a high finish, but no cigar in the league, and a fearlessly good run in Europe to at least the quarter finals. The domestic cups may elude them due to European commitments.

Liverpool fans: what are your expectations for the coming campaign?
