The January transfer window is starting to look like a bit of a soap drama fro Manchester United – and not a very good one. As the newspapers follow David Moyes around Europe the Manchester United manager keeps his cards close to his chest about who he wants, after being badly stung in the summer by his willingness to publicly identify his transfer targets.

But, without actually knowing which players Moyes wants in order to rebuild his Manchester United, the news outlets seem to rather enjoy reporting that yet another star has snubbed the Scot. It seems that the ABUs extend to the press – some of whom seem to be revelling/exagerrating the current downward trend in United’s success.

No team can stay omnipotent forever. But, Manchester United have been written off many times, only to bounce back bigger and stronger than before. The obvious difference in the current dynamic is the new manager. Manchester United could previously count on the outwardly calm, inwardly ravenous but usually inspirited leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson to bring them back to the boil.

The big question now is whether David Moyes has the know how, leadership abilities and eye for a player required to restore Manchester United to the top, in the face of the bottomless wells of oil money being provided for Manchester City and Chelsea. FIFA Fair Play may level the playing fields of course. But these clubs can arguably balance the books by bringing on a nepotistic new sponsor who happily pays well over the odds for the naming rights of a training ground, for example.

Moyes needs to be a visionary to bring United into contention again. He has money to spend and the latest in a long line of midfielders linked to Manchester United is Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik.

The player, nicknamed Marekiaro, has been linked by several news outlets this morning. The Guardian says:

Rafael Benítez wants to head back to Chelsea to relieve the club of either Jon Obi Mikel or Michael Essien. But for now the Spaniard is staying in Napoli to fend off Manchester United’s swoopers, who are hovering over Marek Hamsik.

The Express:

MANCHESTER UNITED are considering a sensational move for Marek Hamsik in a bid to resolve their midfield woes.

He seems to have been around forever but he’s still only 26 and has represented his country 68 times, scoring 11 goals. The creative midfielder has also had a sparkling time of it in Italy netting 66 goals for Napoli in 224 appearances since he joined in 2007. He’s a top class player and would be a great addition for Manchester United.

Let’s see the lad in action
