Tottenham transfers: January Bargain of the Century?

Tottenham have some great talent at their disposal but the front line rightly causes serious concern amongst some Spurs fans.

For a club that has enjoyed the services such talents as Gary Lineker, Jurgen Klinsmann and Dimitar Berbatov, this current front line simply won’t do.

In the longer term we expect to see the return of some stellar A-listers up top. But with Roberto Soldado wilting like a prawn cracker in water since his arrival and Emmanuel Adebayor reaching veteran status Tottenham can only get excited about the excellent young striker Harry Kane right now – it’s simply not enough for a side aspiring to regular Champions League football.

With persistent rumours that Soldado will leave Tottenham need to reinforce short-term and there are few better potentially available options than Schalke’s Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

There is no official word from club or player that he’s available but there is seldom smoke without fire in the back pages of the sports media and this guy has been touted around like a rip off DVD over the last few months. The Mirror reported Thursday:

Inter Milan want the £26m misfit (Soldado), while Schalke are set to sell their Dutch forward rather than watch him walk as a free agent next summer

Spurs may consider letting him go if they make a move for Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar who will be sold for a cut-price £3million.

The Dutch journeyman may not be the most mobile of players and is getting increasingly statuesque as mid-life approaches. But he still has great feet and boy does he know where the goal is. Not once in his career has he ever seriously struggled to find the net and, while some of his most impressive stats (33 in 46 for Heerenveen and 76 in 92 for Ajax) came in an arguably Mickey Mouse league, he’s also done the business in the Bundeslige (61 in in 106 league games for Schalke) and for Holland (35 in 65 caps).

Even at Real Madrid he had a scoring rate (8 in 20 league games) which most would be satisfied with. Put the ball in the right areas and this guy will score goals.

At the mooted price of £3m he will score more goals than Soldado (£26m) making him an absolute bargain and a signing that could make all the difference to Tottenham’s season.

Let’s see him in recent action. Tottenham fans: bargain of the century?

No smoke without fire? We must have been linked to Huntelaar in every one of the last six years!
