Chelsea

Tottenham joint favourites for signature of a superstar

Prodigy could move in January

We don’t use the term ‘superstar’ lightly here. While some players show inordinate promise in their early years, a big money move to an elite club can knock them out of their stride.

But you simply don’t feel that will be the case with Southampton left-back Luke Shaw. Even at 18 he is a model of composure and consistency. He’s nailed down that left-back spot for Southampton and, on this form, it won’t be too long before he is breathing down the necks of Baines and Cole for a place in the England team. The World Cup in 2014 may come a little early for him but who knows where his season may lead.

Southampton have, of course, been one of the success stories of the season under the brilliant tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino. They will be hellbent on keeping the player but rumours persist that he could move as early as January.

Tottenham need a long term solution at left-back and they would surely be interested if the player was available. SkyBet make them joint favourites with Chelsea to sign the player in the coming window. At odds of 8/1 the bookie reckons that London will be the next destination for the player, be it Chelsea or Tottenham.

Chelsea will also want to sort out their left-side as Ashley Cole begins to wane. The fact that Manchester United also need left-back means that this could be one of the most hotly contested signatures in Premier League history.

Let’s see the boy in action. Is he ready for a move to Chelsea or Tottenham or is it too early in his career?

ATM, Spurs need Luke Shaw more than Chelsea as our defenders all suffered injuries as of late.

Would love to see Rose and Shaw compete for first team place.

Both modern day fallbacks. CB we’re OK, once Vertonghen returns and Chiriches to slowly ease his way in and replaces Dawson. Also with a strong Kaboul to rotate to reduce the exhaution

Luke Shaw has a very difficult decision to make regarding his future. Personally, I would stay at Southampton for another year or so as moving too early may actually set him back. On track record, you’d have to say Spurs are the way forward for him as Chelsea would do what they always do, loan him out and then ruin his career, forcing him to move around til he eventually ends up at Liverpool or Newcastle (Glen Johnson and Scott Parker anyone?). Lukaku will be moved on next summer also as Chelsea simply do not have the time or patience to wait for a player to develop. Spurs took a few years to develop Gareth Bale into what he is today and I believe that would be the case if Shaw were to move to Spurs. I’d obviously much rather he stayed with us but we can’t offer him what he would get at Spurs.

Would love to see him at Spurs, but I suspect AVB will prefer someone more experienced at the moment.

Couldn’t see Levy chucking £20m+ at Southampton either – and that surely is what they’d demand in January.
