Tottenham: An impossible signing?

Is this the goalscoring answer for Totters?

A couple of clubs are in really choppy waters right now. Manchester United obviously spring to mind. After that, you have Fulham, Crystal Palace and possibly Tottenham.

It’s not that Tottenham are in a particularly bad position in the league. Similarly, the results haven’t been so awful. But having spent so much money in the transfer window more was expected from the team. Furthermore, questions are being raised about the ability of current manager Andre Villas-Boas to succeed where others have failed and develop the club into a serial Champions League qualifier.

We think that the Tottenham manager worries himself with tabloid speculation when he should be concentrating on the job in hand.

And that job, in the immediate future, is to get Tottenham scoring more goals. They look alright in defence and haven’t conceded too many. But upfront they just aren’t sparking. They obviously need to invest in another striker in the January window.

Dimitar Berbatov anyone? At 32 years of age he is obviously not a long-term option. Furthermore, he left the club under a cloud in 2008, to join Manchester United. Whether the fans would take to him if he did return to the club remains to be seen. But the important question is whether he could still do a job for Tottenham.

His stint at the North London club was clearly the most successful in his career and he hasn’t really done the business since. Of course he got lots of plaudits at Fulham last year with some super displays. But he has done little to rally the troops in their current situation.

If he was accepted back with open arms, we think Berbatov could be an excellent option for Tottenham – someone who wouldn’t expect to play every week but could come on and add composure and the odd goal when the team is struggling.

Berbatov may not be seen to always try his hardest, but he has that rare ability to make your jaw drop, from time to time. He gave some memorable performances at Tottenham and would surely love to return to the club given the option.

There is no doubt that the Berbs is a high quality player in the right surroundings. So what about a return to Tottenham to help with that goalscoring problem?

Let’s remind ourselves of how good he was at Spurs. Tottenham fans would you welcome Berba back?

I assume you are excluding the Golden Boot he got at Man U 2010/11 from your evaluation of him ‘not really doing the business’?
