Chelsea fans will clearly be hurting today – possibly due to the extra few pints that they had in order to clear their minds of the result against Madrid.
The game against Atletico simply demonstrated the fine line between success and failure at the top level. If the second-half had turned out better then the club would still be bouncing today after their brilliant defeat of Liverpool last weekend.
As it is Chelsea look as if they may well end the season without a trophy. But most figures around the club, including Jose Mourinho, would say that if anything Chelsea where ahead of schedule this season.
The Special One should be judged after another transfer window in which he can really start to make his imprint on the side.
Fernando Torres scored last night but Chelsea simply didn’t have the teeth upfront to make a difference.
So the good news is that while Chelsea came agonisingly close to reaching the final of The Champions League they did so with a team in transition.
The new season could bring a new defender, a new midfielder and certainly one or two new strikers.
When asked about links to Chelsea after the game Diego Costa made very ambiguous noises which many believe suggest that he is on the way to Stamford Bridge.
So we think that whilst Chelsea fans will obviously be gutted about the way things went on Wednesday evening the future is most certainly bright.
Come august Mourinho’s team will be much more fully formed and you can expect a lot more goals and some consistently imperious performances.
