Incredibly exciting times at Southampton who are going from strength to strength. They may have dropped a few places in the league over the last few weeks but, in general, the trajectory looks very healthy.

Not only are Southampton playing very good-looking and winning football but they also seem, increasingly, to attract some of the higher profile players in world football.

One such player, who has been linked with Southampton regularly over the last few months, is the Brazilian midfielder Diego.

The attacking midfielder, who currently plays for Wolfsburg, has played in Portugal, Italy and Brazil, scoring goals for fun where ever he has been. Between 2006 and 2009 he scored an incredible 38 goals in 84 appearances for Werder Bremen – all from a midfield position.

He’s played 33 times for Brazil and, at 28, he is at the peak of his powers. The Mirror says:

Southampton target Diego has opened the door for a move to St Mary’s by ruling out returning to old club Atletico Madrid.

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego, 28, is scheduled to be out of contract in the summer.

The Saints’ boss Mauricio Pochettino is lining up a January swoop for the Brazilian, who he coached against when he was Espanyol coach.

Former Santos, Porto, Werder Bremen and Juventus star Diego, who spent the 2011-12 season in Madrid on loan, said, “It is impossible for me to return to Atletico in January.”

If Southampton can get the player he could be one of the signings of the season and really help The Saints kick on in the second half of the campaign. Let’s take a look at him in action. Southampton fans does this guy boil your potatoes?
