More business close?

Sunderland are reportedly looking to sign young left back Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea.

The Black Cat’s manager Gus Poyet is interested in bringing the Dutchman to the Stadium of Light on a permanent deal according to The Sunderland Echo.

Meanwhile The BBC says a deal could be close:

Sunderland are close to a deal to sign Chelsea left-back Patrick van Aanholt, reports BBC Newcastle

Some rumours are suggesting that a deal has already been penned.

With a deal for Marcos Alonso seeming less and less likely, Sunderland are in desperate need for a left back. They have had to play under 21 player David Ferguson in pre-season games as they currently have no senior left back at the club.

They may well be able to land van Aanholt for a reasonable price. The defender only has 12 months remaining on his contract and has already stated his desire to leave Chelsea this summer.

“Where will I play next season?”

“I don’t know yet. It definitely won’t be at Chelsea. I am done here.”

This all means that Gus Poyet could land a player with plenty of experience for a small fee. Van Aanholt has been at Chelsea since 2009 but has only made two appearances in that time. He has spent the majority of time on loan at a variety of clubs, including Vitesse, Wigan and Leicester.

The North East side are also being linked with Uruguayan winger Christian Rodriguez. According to The Shields Gazette, Sunderland are keen on bringing the 28-year-old to the club from Atletico Madrid.

Rodriguez has played for a number of clubs in the past ten years. He spent three seasons at PSG before joining Porto in 2008, where he made 70 league appearances. Since his move to Madrid in 2012, he has largely had to settle to making substitute appearances.

Gus Poyet has admitted interest in the winger, telling The Sunderland Echo:

“It’s ongoing. At the moment it’s a possibility, but it’s no more than that.

“He’s a player that I admire a lot because he’s got power, desire and experience playing with the top teams.”

Let’s see Sunderland’s potential new recruit in action. Sunderland fans: a good investment?
