Sunderland linked with A-list signing

Sunderland are one of several teams looking at the possibility of bringing Chilean World Cup star Eduardo Vargas to The Premier League. Manager Gus Poyet is still looking for striking options and has highlighted the Napoli forward as a potential target reports The Northern Echo.

GUS POYET has turned to Chilean World Cup striker Eduardo Vargas as an alternative option to Fabio Borini

Sunderland’s strike force was largely muted last season. Steven Fletcher suffered a number of injuries that kept him out of action for most of the year while U.S. international Jozy Altidore could not repeat his form from the Eredivisie and failed to make a significant impression.

Only Connor Wickham and Fabio Borini were able to find the net on a regular basis. However, Connor Wickham has been the subject of much transfer speculation over the past few days with clubs such as Crystal Palace, Hull and West Ham also showing interest in the striker.

On the other hand, a deal to bring Borini to the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis appears to have stalled. The Black Cats had an offer accepted for the Italian but so far a deal has yet to be finalised.

This means that the club and manager have had to consider other options in the transfer market and Vargas has emerged as a serious alternative.

The 24-year old striker an be considered an A-list talent as he played an important part in the brilliant Chile squad during the 2014 World Cup and is experienced at international level, having achieved 32 full caps since 2010 and scored an impressive 15 goals. His form at club level though has not been as consistent. Loan spells and Valencia and Gremio have only seen him find the net 14 times, while he has only managed three goals at Napoli in 28 games.

Despite this, his performances for Chile indicate that he has some talent and more regular football could give him the confidence to become more of a threat in front of goal.

Poyet could face tough competition to land the Napoli front man though. Recent reports have indicated that both Arsenal and QPR are also keen to sign the player and both could realistically offer a more lucrative financial package than Sunderland.

Let’s see him in action. Sunderland fans: keen?
