Sunderland: The next major signing?

Nigerian midfielder Michel Babatunde has confirmed that Sunderland are among a number of clubs interested in signing him. The Sunderland Echo reports the player as saying he has been contacted by representatives of the Wearside club and that he is interested in the offer.

“I have received several offers from different places, but I’m interested in the one from Sunderland. They have contacted my agent and we will see how it goes from there.”

The player also went on to explain that it is likely that he will leave his current club this summer, following an impressive season and World Cup campaign.

“I’m probably going to leave Volyn. We have to discuss the offers on ground but most likely, I will be leaving this summer.”

Babatunde joined current club Volyn Lutsk in 2013 after spending two years at Ukrainian side Kryvbas.

The 21 year old winger put in a number of good performances for Nigeria at The World Cup in Brazil. However, he broke his wrist in a game against Argentina, putting an end to his time in the tournament.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has been in Brazil for the last few weeks working as a pundit for ITV so could have had time to get a first-hand look at the player. This might explain why The Black Cats are interested in the player who has no Premier League experience.

The North East side are in need of reinforcements after surviving relegation last season. Fans will be hoping that they can build on last year and put together a strong squad that is capable of competing for mid-table places.

Babatunde would also provide cover in an area that Sunderland have struggled with recently. Wingers at the club have generally disappointed in the last few years, failing to find any consistently.

The news follows reports that Sunderland are interested in signing Jack Rodwell and Kurt Zouma on loan, further bolstering their squad for the coming year.
