Sunderland clearly want to prioritise the forward areas of their squad before the end of the transfer window. With a deal for Borini not yet materialising it appears that the club are looking at contingency plans.

One player who Sunderland fans will remember very fondly from his loan spell at the club is Danny Welbeck.

The England international had an excellent spell at the club a couple of years ago and that gave him the platform for his blossoming career.

But there were rumours towards the end of last season that he wasn’t happy playing out wide at Manchester United and reports this week have resurfaced about a potential move. Hull were said to be keen to make a bid and Sunderland are the latest club linked.

The Daily Mail reports:

Sunderland have expressed an interest in Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck as they grow increasingly exasperated over a deal for Liverpool’s Fabio Borini.

Welbeck was the subject of a £12million offer from Hull but has opted against joining up with Steve Bruce.

He may not be as good a finisher as Fabio Borini but, overall, he would be an even better signing for the club. His all-round play and influence on the game is greater than that of the Italian and his finishing is getting better all the time.

On the flip side we would be extremely surprised if Manchester United agreed to a deal. Even though he’s not a first choice player if either Rooney or van Persie gets injured then Welbeck will be a nailed on starter.

And in general he will be a very important member of the squad this season. So, while it would be a great deal, we just can;t see it happening.

Let’s see the lad in action. Sunderland fans: gettable?

Well said. Welbeck was a great addition to Sunderland when he was here and very popular. He’d be welcomed like a returning member of the family and his quality should really make the difference that is required.
Sorry, but it’s abundantly clear that Borini doesn’t want to come to the Stad of Light, and is it worth waiting and hoping given that fact? Whilst he did well last season everyone knew he was more focussed on his options with Liverpool – reinforced by his own comments.
