Sunderland determined to land their man – report

Gus Poyet is keen to bring Santiago Vergini back to the Stadium of Light following a successful loan spell reports The Sunderland Echo. The defender made 14 appearances for Sunderland last season and played a key role in helping them fight off relegation.

Although Vergini had a somewhat disappointing start to his career on Wearside, he had an excellent run of form towards the end of the season after switching to right back. It was these performances and his ability to play at centre back and full back that has made the manager desperate to add him to his team for next year.

Speaking to the same paper he said:

“If one of the defenders can give you the option to play somewhere else, it helps you. When you’ve got a centre-back who can play right-back, it gives you a big hand and I know Santiago can play there now. I knew it, having watched him play right-back in Argentina, but he has also shown now he can do it well in the Premier League.”

It appears that a clause allowing the move to be made permanent if Sunderland remained in The Premier League was entered into the loan agreement. This could make the transfer of the Argentinian a much simpler affair.

Sunderland are in need of strengthening their squad after a number of players have already left. The club released Phil Bardsley and Andrea Dossena while Ondrej Celustka and Marcos Alonso have also returned to their parent clubs following their loans spells.

Poyet has already added to Sunderland’s squad with the club announcing today that Billy Jones has signed from West Brom on a free transfer. The versatile defender will join the Black Cats on 1 July, adding more depth to a squad that has been depleted in recent weeks.
