Shocker: Liverpool trumped by Fulham in pursuit of goal machine – report

We are still getting lots of concerned comments from Liverpool fans during this transfer window. Despite some brilliant signings, questions are being asked about the overall transfer acumen of Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool. Some think that he hasn’t been proactive enough in this window and that he has signed too many average players in his time at Anfield.

But the way that Liverpool are playing at the moment they look like genuine title contenders. Ok, they are six points off the pace and have to compete with titans for the crown. But, in terms of performance level, this is the best we have seen from Liverpool in years. They aren’t just winning – they are battering teams. Even good teams. Everton, lest we forget, got a win at Old Trafford recently.

And with the strikers playing so beautifully together you would imagine that the forward line would not be a priority in this window. But Liverpool have been linked with strikers in the recent past – including Olympiacos hitman Kostas Mitroglou.

Word this morning is that Fulham have muscled in to lead the chase for the guy who scores goals like there’s no tomorrow. The Daily Mail reports:

Fulham are in talks over a £12million deal for Olympiacos striker Kostas Mitroglou.

Fulham had a £9.5m offer for Mitroglou rejected last week but have returned with the asking price for the prolific 25-year-old, who had been watched by Liverpool and Newcastle earlier in the season.

Olympiacos said: ‘There is still no definitive agreement with Fulham for Kostas Mitroglou. Discussions will continue on Wednesday but only for an agreement of more than 15 million euros (£12.36m).’

So it looks like the player could well move to Fulham in what would amount to a major fillip for the club. They have had a roller-coaster of a season and they will continue to seriously flirt with relegation unless their form picks up noticeably in the next month. It’s a make or break time for Fulham and their fledgling manager Rene Meulensteen.

  1. Bill says:

Why would you think we need to spend money on another striker when we have the SAS. what we need are strangely midfielders.
