47 Caps, La Liga winner: Arsenal now favourites to sign majestic midfielder

Slick player

We are genuinely hoping that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger surprises us over the next couple of weeks by signing up Sami Khedira from Real Madrid.

Arsenal are so close to becoming a great side but they do need that extra steel through the spine of the team.

Everyone seemingly knows it except the Arsenal manager himself.

We are now coming to the conclusion that he simply refuses to spend top dollar on defensive players.

He’s happy to do so for ‘beautiful’ players who can win games with goals. But not for players who can win games through graft and defensive solidity.

But it still seems inconceivable that Arsenal will start the season without purchasing at least one more player and perhaps Wenger will look for a cheaper option to bolster his midfield.

One player who may have become available over the last few days is the Barcelona midfielder Alex Song.

He was an unsung hero of the Arsenal squad until he left in 2012. A quietly efficient midfielder with mobility and good passing range.

He would be a good fit for the anchor role at Arsenal. He may not have the influence of Khedira but he could still improve the balance of the team.

Song hasn’t exactly been on the periphery of the Barcelona squad, having played 34 times in Barcelona’s La Liga winning season two years ago. He also made 31 appearances, in all competitions, last year.

But Barcelona look as if they want to sign one more player this summer and to do so they’ll probably need to offload one or two members of their first-team squad.

Interestingly bookmakers Skybet have Arsenal as favourites to sign Song if he does leave Barca this summer at odds of 3/1.

At 26 he’s still a spring chicken and could give five years of service to Arsenal at the top level. We think that he would be an excellent addition to the squad.

Let’s remind ourselves of his qualities. Arsenal fans: would you be happy to bring Song back to the club?

Song fell out with Steve Bould and was sold, never won anything for the club & wasn’t fighting for the cause. Why would you want him back?!

Also, Wenger spent up to £16m on Calum Chambers and £12m on Debuchy. But you’re right, he won’t spend big on defensive talent. Good research, A*

we should re-sign Alex Song then we would have something to SING about as he knows our way of playing and most of the players so he would settle in well.
