Oh Dear – Manchester United reportedly set to waste millions on a player they don’t need

Not right for United

Reports today suggest that Louis van Gaal will start his tenure at Manchester United by signing Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller. The Daily Mail reckons:

Louis van Gaal is planning to announce his arrival as Manchester United manager by pulling off the spectacular signing of Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.
Muller’s Bayern team-mate Toni Kroos and Borussia Dortmund pair Mats Hummels and Marco Reus have all been linked with Van Gaal, who will be confirmed as David Moyes’ successor next week.

Manchester United already have a decent goal hanger in Javier Hernandez. Quite why they would want another who has noticeably less pace and isn’t a patch on Wayne Rooney or RvP is utterly beyond us.

Of course, this could all be hollow hype – van Gaal hasn’t even publicly opened his mouth in relation to Manchester United yet – but the suggestion that he wants Muller will shock some.

Even a casual observer could tell you that, while reported targets such as Toni Kroos and Marco Reus would be fantastic and crucial additions to the squad, Manchester United certainly don’t need any more number tens, or mid-paced target men.

Some may rate the German but many Manchester United fans will simply hope that this rumour has been pulled out thin air to sell papers. Because Muller may have his virtues but he would do nothing to redress the current imbalences in a United squad which has good strikers but lacks dynamism in midfield and the wide areas.
