When Newcastle tonked Stoke 5-1 on Boxing Day things were going swimmingly for Alan Pardew. After another crazy season last year the Newcastle boss has once again steadied the ship and consolidated the team as a Premier League heavyweight. But 3 defeats have followed – the latest of which was a home humiliation by a newly invigorated Cardiff side in the cup.

But you have to say that things are still looking pretty rosy overall. But the loss of the inspirational Fabricio Coloccini, for potentially 6 weeks, and the suspension of Mathieu Debuchy have left Newcastle less than solid at the back.

One would imagine that defensive reinforcements will be looked at as a matter of priority in the winter window. A club of Newcastle’s size will require a player of a certain calibre and finding one of those can be very difficult mid-season.

But one player who is available and surely fits the bill is Everton’s Dutch veteran John Gijsbert Alan Heitinga – Johnny to us. The 30 year old has, for some reason, apparently been deemed surplus to requirements at Everton and nearly moved to West Ham last week before pulling the plug on the move.

With 87 caps for a very strong Dutch squad this guy knows how to defend at the top level. He may have lost a little pace but, at just 30 years of age, he’s certainly not past it.

We think that he would be superb signing for Newcastle. Bookmaker SkyBet have got Newcastle at short odds to sign The Dutchman in January at odds of 6/4. Surely the guy is worth a shout. Whats more he’s potentially available. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if Newcastle declare an interest int he coming days.
