Manchester United: World Cup master to sign?

Manchester United’s centre backs have been really good during pre-season and they will all have a big part to play in the coming campaign.

But, however highly LvG rates his current top three, he can’t expect them all to stay injury or fatigue free for the entire season.

If Louis was only using two at the back he might just get away with it. But the 3-5-2 means that Manchester United are certain to bring one or two more defenders in this summer.

The best one, for our money, would have been Porto’s Mangala. But he looks set for City and LvG appears to want more mature players for the role. After that you have to look at Mats Hummels as the next most desirable player who could conceivably be sold by his club.

At 25 he’s just won The World Cup and his confidence will be sky high. Add this to his overall ability and you would have a fantastic addition for Manchester United. Reports on Friday suggest that a deal may not be dead.

The Daily Mail reckons:

Manchester United are hoping a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels can be revived with the German side now looking to bring in Liverpool’s Portuguese centre-back Tiago Ilori as a potential replacement.

The German international has played 227 times for Dortmund since arriving from Bayern Munchen in 2008 – first on loan and then permanently.

He’s scored a notable 20 times in that period to show that he can offer threat up top too. All in all he’d be a fantastic signing if he could be persuaded that a year without Champions League football wouldn’t be too bad.

We think that, considering Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp’s penchant for Shinji Kagawa, we can’t altogether rule out a swap deal.

Let’s take a look at the imperious German in action. Manchester United fans: crucial signing?
