Manchester United’s transfer problems worsen

You could argue that Manchester United didn’t want Toni Kroos. Although it seems like an absolutely bizarre assumption considering the lack of quality in midfield and the fact that he’s just signed for the richest club in the world.

You could also argue that Louis van Gaal didn’t fancy Cesc Fabregas – but anyone who saw his performance against Burnley in Chelsea’s first game of the season would find that very hard to believe.

As for Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels, Arsenal possibly didn’t want to sell within England and Borussia Dortmund are adamant that player won’t leave the club this summer. Meanwhile Mehdi Benatia may opt for Bayern Munchen.

But you can’t help but think that many to most of these players simply don’t want to come to Manchester United. There seems to be an assumption from around the club that big players would always to sign for the English giants – one of the most glamorous clubs in the world apparently – regardless of short term slumps.

But with Thomas Muller and Marco Reus seemingly turning down moves to Manchester United this summer reality has started to bite. The club can offer big wages but its exclusion from The Champions League is massive. Football careers are short and the best players in the industry want to be on the biggest stage every season.

We’re still optimistic for Manchester United fans that some marquee signings can be made before the end of the window. But after the debacle of last year you would have assumed that Manchester United would have done their business early. The fact that this hasn’t happened will lead many to believe that the appeal of coming to Manchester United has quickly faded now that they aren’t in Europes’s top competition.

Manchester United fans: Is the club having problems bringing in the best or are we about to see major business?
