Manchester United’s entire summer shopping list revealed – report
You begin to run out of things to say when it gets this bad. I was talking to a Manchester United fan yesterday about how expectations have plummeted beyond belief in such a short space of time. One year ago it would have been difficult enough for Manchester United fans to envisage a trophyless season. The idea of not finishing top four was unimaginable.
But such is the fall from grace that Liverpool look miles batter than Manchester United right now. An 11 point gap would be difficult enough for Manchester United to bridge under Sir Alex. But under Moyes the performance levels have been so bad that you would be surprised if they managed to win the game against their old rivals at Old Trafford in March. Make no mistake Manchester United are in crisis. They are there for the taking. Just ask Fulham, Sunderland, West Brom and Olympiakos.
David Moyes clearly wants to bring in a raft of new players. But he is getting so little out of his current crop that you have to wonder whether he should be allowed to deplete the financial reserves of Manchester United further. Let’s not forget he’s already spent £65m – did Fergie ever spend that, net, in one season?
The Telegraph, who clearly have top level Manchester United sources appear to lay open Manchester United’s transfer plans for the summer. The shopping list includes some of the best players in the world. But are players alone the problem? We think not. The Telegraph today states:
Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, Borussia Dortmund’s holding midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos and Southampton full-back Luke Shaw are the priority targets, with Paris St-Germain forward Edinson Cavani and Atlético Madrid’s Diego Costa also being watched.
United fear that Kroos will negotiate a new contract at Bayern, while Chelsea lead the chase for Shaw, who is also interesting Manchester City.
Should Shaw prove beyond United’s reach, Atlético’s Filipe Luis will become a fall-back option.
All top players who would make excellent additions to the team. But would they want to play for David Moyes? You could imagine a real personality like Mourinho or Klopp persuading these guys that a year outside The Champions League wouldn’t be so bad in the longer term.
But David Moyes doesn’t appear to be impressing anyone. RvP’s comments in the aftermath of the game spoke of top players who are utterly disenchanted by a manager who is out of his depth. Someone who lacks a strong and modern football vision.
