Only one choice

The Daily Star reports today that the England overhaul will start with Wayne Rooney being named as the new captain of his country.

He’s the obvious choice to take over from Steven Gerrard who will probably end his international career in Brazil. There have been murmurs the from England camp that they want Gerard to continue – but at 34 years of age he probably won’t be paying a big part in the next tournament, so surely it’s time to get the younger lads in.

With Rooney potentially taking over as England captain many will be asking whether he will also get the Manchester United armband.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is obviously a big fan of Robin van Persie and has made him captain for Holland.

But soccersweep thinks think that the right choice for captain at Manchester United is Wayne Rooney. He has been at the club for 10 years and has more than earned his stripes.

With the contract wangles behind him he looks set to stay at Manchester United for the rest of his career and he commands respect from the entire dressing room.

To give the captain’s armband to Van Persie after just two seasons at the club may cause problems with other senior players.

RvP is also undoubtedly a figure of respect at Manchester United but there has to be a natural packing order and Rooney has given his all to the club for too long to be overlooked.

The Liverpudlian embodies the Manchester United spirit – even when he’s off form he gives 100% on the pitch and works his socks off every time he plays. Add to that the goals, assists, tackles, passes and general world class contribution to United’s most successful period and, for us, there can be only one true heir to the throne.

Let’s remind ourselves of the brilliance of the man. Manchester United fans – it has to be Rooney right?
