Bayern Munich

Manchester United: These 5 major players to come in and a quintet of departures needed if United want quick return to the top.

Bayern was perfect gauge

There has been so much talk about a massive overhaul, the £200 million transfer spend, and other perhaps slightly exaggerated projections for Manchester United over the next year.

But the match against Bayern Munich really provided the perfect barometer. It told David Moyes exactly where Manchester United are and where the bar currently sits.

Actually Manchester United didn’t measure up too badly. Defensively, at any rate, they held their own.

Moving forward Manchester United will definitely need to buy a left full-back in the summer.

But talk about needing to spend huge amounts on the centre of the defence is wider the mark. Because, based on last night’s performance, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are the future of Manchester United’s defence.

With Johnny Evans also providing mature quality Manchester United may not need to compensate for the losses of the Vidic and Rio Ferdinand with two new names.

One more centre back would be ideal however and, out wide, someone like Luke Shaw could provide the perfect option for Manchester United over the next decade.

It’s really the midfield that needs to be looked at. Two wingers and two central midfielders should be the priority for David Moyes this summer. That’s where Manchester united are really weak.

Antonio Valencia gave a sterling performance last night and we would keep him in the squad. But Manchester United need another a-lister for right midfield. Lucas Moura or Andros Townsend would be ideal acquisitions.

Adnan Januzaj is a thrilling young player and will continue to improve next year – potentially on the left flank. But we think that, ultimately, he will be a number 10. So, although not an absolute priority, another left-winger would be nice.

And Manchester United cannot be a top team again if they don’t have two new, charismatic central midfielders. Ross Barkley would be the dream acquisition but he will stay at Everton for at least another year. Kroos and Reus would be just the tonic to add drive, guile and goals.

Any top team will always be looking for additional strikers but Manchester United are pretty well covered here. Any additions would depend on strikers leaving the club first. But there isn’t too much wrong with the attacking array of Mata, Kagawa, Hernandez, Rooney, Welbeck and RvP.

I hope United somehow manage to pull off deals for Toni Kroos, Marco Reus, Carvalho, Mangala, Shaw and Garay.
I would dearly love to sign Hummels instead of Garay, but i highly doubt Dortmand will sell us Reus & Hummels together unless Kagawa is offered!
To be honest though, i won’t be to disappointed if we fail to sign any of the above so called “£200m targets” especially after the transfer mess last summer.
Please sell Cleverly, Buttner, Young, Welbeck, Nani and Kagawa.
Finally, i’m very disappointed with Fellaini but believe that everyone deserves a opportunity to put things right!
