Manchester United: Price set for world star

Big player

Manchester United and Arsenal are apparently in the queue for Real Madrid forward Angel di Maria.

He’s just had the best season at Real Madrid so it’s not completely clear why the club would want to sell him. Sure, they already have brilliant wide men with Bale and Ronaldo.

But if we were managing those three in one team we would simply put Ronaldo up top and the other two on the wings – for our money that’s a better combination than Bale, Ronaldo and Benzema – but there is a persistent suggestion that Di Maria could move on this summer.

Arsenal and Manchester United are surely on the lookout for wingers and this guy represents ready made, proven class – someone who would improve most first elevens straight away.

Reports suggest that if Arsenal or Manchester United do want him they will have to pay in the region of £40m.

The Metro says:

Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly told several Premier League sides that they will have to stump up £40m if they want to sign winger Angel di Maria this summer.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in bringing the Argentina international to England in the coming months with the 26-year-old recently admitting that he is unsure where he will be playing next season.

Los Blancos previously insisted that they would not sell Di Maria – who helped the club win their historic 10th European title last term – but Real may be willing to listen to a big-money offer, according to The Daily Star.

It’s a lot of money but, at 26, he’s a player in his prime and someone who could make a big impact on the title race in England.

The question on everyone’s lips at Manchester United is whether Louis van Gaal will revert to a 3-5-2 formation as he has done with Holland.

If that does happen then he would go with wing backs instead of wingers and that might mean Di Maria is less desirable for the northern giants.

That said, we have seen Arjen Robben do a fantastic job up front for Holland at The World Cup so LvG has no problems with putting wingers in that ‘2’ up top.

Arsenal have been linked with various wide men over the last few weeks and Angel Di Maria is one of those to have been mentioned in relation to the club.

Whether they decide to make him their major summer signing is debatable considering their need for strikers and a defensive midfielder.

But whichever club he goes to this summer there will be considerable excitement about the signing.

Let’s have a look at him in action. Arsenal and Manchester United fans: keen?

Sorry I just cannot agree with all this hype about Di Maria. I live in Spain and have seen Madrid quite a lot, as you would imagine. Di Maria spends a lot of time on the floor as his balance isn’t great. apart from the very occasional screamer, he will miss many more chances than he will score. He’s another one of these players that I would put on the “vastly overrated” shelf, along with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Barry and most of Manchester United last season.
In my opinion no club should consider spending more than 5 million euros on Di Maria, he’s just not worth it.
