Double deal?

Manchester United are reportedly close to securing a move for experienced defender Thomas Vermaelen. The centre back is set to sign for the club at the end of The World Cup for a fee of around £11 million, reports The Daily Mail.

Thomas Vermaelen set to complete £11m move from Arsenal to rivals Manchester United after World Cup

The 28 year old Belgian has struggled for game time at Arsenal due to the successful partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. A move to Manchester may well tempt him away from The Emirates if he can be guaranteed first team football.

Manchester United are in desperate need of a number of defenders. Their club captain Nemanja Vidic left the club this summer, having been a vital part of the squad since his arrival eight years ago. He was also the regular partner of other long term centre back Rio Ferdinand who has also parted company with Old Trafford.

Between them they had amassed over 500 appearances for The Red Devils and won most honours at club level. Other younger defenders at the club have so far failed to impress. Both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are yet to establish permanent spots in the Manchester United starting eleven.

With Louis van Gaal set to take over the running of the club after The World Cup, changes to the side that disappointed last season are inevitable. The Dutchman may well want to bring in new centre backs who he can trust to play in the style he will impose next year.

Meanwhile The Guardian also reports that the new manager may also be interested in fellow Dutchman Stefan de Vrij. The 22 year old has spent his entire club career at Feyenoord, making 135 league appearances.

He is currently in Brazil as part of The World Cup squad for the Netherlands and is therefore very familiar with Van Gaal and his methods.
