Manchester United: Moyes ‘starting to see’ this guy as future captain

Future captain?

It feels like there is little decision to be made about the next captain of Manchester United. With Nemanja Vidic leaving at the end of the season and the future of the superb Patrice Evra up in the air, there is only one true candidate to succeed them.

Now that he has signed the new contract, which will more than likely see him end his top level career at Manchester United, Wayne Rooney seems head and shoulders above the rest in terms of potential replacements.

He represents the best of Manchester United – the passion combined with the inordinate skill. The inner belief and the swashbuckling style. Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s talisman in the strictest sense.

But, Spanish daily Marca today reveals that David Moyes is starting to see David de Gea as a future Manchester United captain should Rooney leave or retire. Marca says:

David de Gea keeps adding to his reputation at Manchester United and he’s become a favourite of David Moyes and the fans, who are starting to see the Spaniard as a potential future captain if Wayne Rooney were to leave.

There is certainly no doubting the quality of the player. He has ironed the youthful inconsistencies out of his game to become one of the really world class players in the squad. His positioning, reflexes and agility are superb. He mangoes to hold onto everything and he has bulked up to become a big physical presence behind the defenders.

Manchester United’s biggest problem could be keeping him out of the clutches of La Liga giants. But, if he does decide he wants to leave Manchester United one day the club can, at least, expect to command a huge fee for the lad – he’s got to be worth £40m plus in today’s market.

But we still remain uncertain as to whether he has the vocal presence to be the captain of Manchester United. It’s always more difficult for goalkeepers to get their point across on the pitch than the outfield players. Furthermore de Gea isn’t the loudest of players anyway – he tends to lead by example.

Either way few can argue that he is one of the jewels in Manchester United’s currently slightly tatty crown. Let’s see him in action.
