Manchester United : Midfield solution identified – reports

The Theatre Of Dreams

The answer for United?

It really is a mess at Manchester United at the moment. Though we won’t go too deeply into the reasons why (you will find those in other soccersweep articles today) it irks us that David Moyes keeps telling the cameras that he thinks his team are playing well during these defeats.

Now, I think that despite many arguable deficiencies, most of us would agree that the new Manchester United boss is at least a hard-working sort – off scouting players around Europe during any free moments. So surely he must have taken that time to look at how Manchester United played before he turned up.

Even though Manchester United won the league last season it wasn’t regarded as one of the best vintages. But you can still see ample passages of great play – where Manchester United played ‘well’. What we find hard to believe is that, based on Manchester United over the last 20 years, Moyes can say that his team is playing ‘well’ by United standards. He’s clutching at straws.

We also think that it doesn’t matter how many good players Moyes buys in if he’s not coaching them to their potential. Juan Mata is just two games into his Manchester United career but he already looks less like the inspirational Chelsea playmaker that United bought.

The playing staff is, however, part of the problem. New blood needs to be brought in in the summer. Perhaps starting with this guy:

Manchester United are weighing up a summer move for William Carvalho after sending scouts to watch the Sporting Lisbon midfielder again at the weekend.

David Moyes will be handed a substantial transfer kitty to overhaul his squad at the end of the current campaign and a dominating midfielder remains a priority.

Carvalho has drawn comparisons to Patrick Vieira in some quarters due to his powerful presence in the middle of the park.

Manchester United have, of course, already bought nearly £30m worth of defensive midfielder in the shape of Marouane Fellaini. Perhaps, long-term he is hoping to play a 4-2-3-1 with two defence-minded players shielding the back four.

Manchester United sent scouts for the umpteenth time to see Carvalho in action, according to the report, but his release clause is prohibitive – it’s apparently set at £37m.

Let’s see the lad in action. Manchester United fans. Is this what the team needs?

I think long-term Moyes wants to play either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-2-1 formation, so we are going to need strong midfielder’s. Unfortunately Fellaini is going to end up being a very strong squad player for Man Utd long-term, but that’s not bad for the club. It’s clear that they need a stronger squad in terms of quality, so I do see another 2 central midfielder’s arriving in the summer. William Carvalho looks a great prospect, but they also need someone with influence and around 26-27 years old, which would be at the peak of their powers. If they climb the huge mountain and get 4th spot then they have to go all out for Vidal.

Surely Fernando at 1/3 of the money is a better option?
