The big move so far in the transfer window has been Manchester United and Juan Mata. That may well remain the biggest deal of the January market. But we just feel that there could be a mega move done somewhere today.

Lest we forget, there is more money in the Premier League than ever before. Consequently, there is more at stake for the teams threatened with relegation, and much more to lose for the elite sides who may not qualify for The Champions League.

Manchester United most certainly fit into the latter category. They seem to have a huge amount of money to spend but have six points to make up on Liverpool, who are themselves currently flying, with 15 games to go.

We think that it is an absolute priority for the top brass at Manchester United to have the club in Europe’s elite competition. Their whole infrastructure over the last 15 years has been based on that income. So don’t be at all surprised if another big move is made today.

The one that has been mooted by some is Andros Townsend – absolutely sensational winger who would light up Manchester United. We have no doubt that he would become the darling of Old Trafford.

Still a move this late in the transfer window, for such a big deal, seems problematic. If the foundations for transfer had been laid earlier in the month then perhaps it could still happen. But if it’s just an idea concocted today then the chances are remote.

Nevertheless there has been such interest in the reports that SkyBet have opened up on market on the player joining another club in this window. Unsurprisingly, at the time of publishing, Manchester United are favourites for the signature of Townsend in January at odds of 7/2. Manchester City are second favourites way back at 33/1.

It’s the dream deadline day for Manchester United fans if it does happen. But we still think that, at this point, it is a distant prospect.
