After a sensational debut performance under new coach Louis van Gaal Manchester United look as if they will definitely be continuing with three centre backs in their new look formation.
And although the central defenders got caught out with a few wide balls early on in that game, they are bound to take some time to adapt. Overall, Louis van Gaal must surely have been impressed with what he saw from Manchester United’s current senior trio.
Smalling has great pace, Jones is a real leader and Jonny Evans brings more experience to the party, at the age of 26.
But every top squad needs two really good players for each position and LvG will surely look to invest in one or two more senior pros, despite the fact that Manchester United also having some promising youngsters coming through.
Reports today suggest that the Manchester United manager is still seriously pursuing Thomas Vermaelen, Stefan De Vrij and Mats Hummels.

LOUIS VAN GAAL is considering moves for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen and Feyenoord’s Stefan De Vrij.
Of the three, Hummels looks like the most difficult acquisition but also the best player.
Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp suggested earlier in the week that there is no way Hummels will leave the club this summer, especially at the £17 million price being mooted.
Money talks in football and Dortmund may have to relent if the player decides that he wants to move.
As for De Vrij and Vermaelen we think that they could well both be in Manchester United colours come to start of the season.
De Vrij is a particularly exciting youngster with fantastic composure and really good technique.
We would love to see him in The Premier League next season because he makes defending look sexy in the same way that Rio and Patrice did for many years.
