Manchester United: Louis van Gaal’s next talisman?

With Manchester United’s main protagonists, over the last decade, leaving the club or coming to the ends of their careers you feel that Manchester United definitely need new blood to take them forward.

Titans such as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have left the club. Patrice Evra could well follow suit and another stalwart, Michael Carrick (33 on 28 July), is beginning to show signs of his age with another bad injury in training this week.

Such players are extremely hard to replace. But replace them Manchester United must if they want to maintain and proliferate their pre-eminence in the Premier League and further afield.

It’s not just about buying talented players in this regard but also about buying real characters -footballers who can come in and drag the team into the next era of success – natural competitors and leaders like Wayne Rooney are hard to find.

But one such player has been linked to the club again in latest reports. That’s the brilliant Ross Barkley. We felt it absolutely criminal that Roy Hodgson didn’t use him more at The World Cup when he is clearly one of the best players that the country has.

The Star reports today that Manchester United are amongst a host of clubs who are keen on the prodigy.

Manchester United and Chelsea are keen on Barkley and both had him watched closely last season.

We have to say that we are massive fans of the player. We feel that, just like Wayne Rooney, he can do anything on a football pitch. Play him in defence and he’ll be a warrior. Chuck him in midfield and he will control the game. And if you put him up top he’ll bag you a goal.

We must also say that, while he would be an unbelievable addition for Manchester United, we don’t think that he will move this summer. He’s happy where he is and he will be the main man again next season at his current club.

But, you can’t help thinking how good United would be with this force of nature in the side. One day perhaps….
