Manchester United are starting to look like a proper team again under the mercurial management of Louis van Gaal.

The determination is back, the passing and control of games is improving. And Manchester United are getting the ball from back to front quickly and cleverly again – they are once more getting behind defences after a year of absolute dross.

Some might argue that Manchester United don’t need to invest further – they could just be patient and wait for all their talent to mature.

But the more trigger happy Manchester United fans would suggest that a top centre back and top anchor man would turn this team into a title challenger again.

One centre back, who we like, has been linked again today. The Guardian says:

Manchester United and Chelsea also plan to do battle over Atlético Madrid centre-back João Miranda. He’ll cost £18m (€23m)..

The lad is no spring chicken – he’s just turned 30. But he’s in great shape and looks as if he could give at least 3 top years to a Champions League side. He’s 6ft 1in but mobile and quick. He’s great on the ground and loves to provide goal threat at set pieces.

The report suggests that Manchester United may use Juan Mata as bait and to bring the price down – the poor Spaniard seems to be on his way of Manchester United one way or another.

United fans: would you want to spend this sort of money on a 30 year old or stick with what you have?
