Manchester United Intrigue: Squad numbers released – but who fills these 3 vacant shirts?

Intrigue

You could hardly say that Manchester United have had a poor summer in the transfer market, having brought Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw to the club for a combined £60 million.

But it is commonly accepted that those deals were already in the pipeline before Louis van Gaal rocked up at Manchester United. Since his official unveiling, we have only had morsels to chew on with regards transfer activity.

It has been a pretty normal summer in that respect but Manchester United’s need for extra talent is painfully obvious this year.

We do feel that a really big deal is imminent as the silence from Old Trafford is becoming deafening. And the latest morsel that we have been thrown relates to kit numbers.

Because Manchester United have released their squad numbers for the year and they read like this:

Shirt numbers for the 2014/15 season:
1. De Gea; 2. Rafael; 3. Shaw; 4. Jones; 6. Evans; 8. Mata; 10. Rooney; 11. Januzaj; 12. Smalling; 13. Lindegaard; 14. Chicharito; 16. Carrick; 17. Nani; 18. Young; 19. Welbeck; 20. van Persie; 21. Herrera; 22. Powell; 23. Cleverley; 24. Fletcher; 25. Valencia; 26. Kagawa; 28. Anderson; 29. Zaha; 30. Varela; 31. Fellaini; 34. Lawrence; 35. Lingard; 36. Vermijl; 38. M Keane; 39. Thorpe; 40. Amos; 41. James; 42. Blackett; 45. Petrucci; 46. Rothwell; 48. W Keane; 49. Wilson; 50. Johnstone.

Adnan Januzaj has, rightfully in our opinion, been given the number 11 vacated by Ryan Giggs. Luke Shaw has taken Patrice Evra’s number 3 shirt. But noone has yet claimed the numbers 5, 7 or 9.

If Manchester United weren’t planning big signings between now and September they would surely have allocated those numbers to current regulars as a natural evolution.

And while we all know that there are no guarantees in football, the club is clearly hellbent on filling those shirts by the end of the window.

Based on current speculation you might imagine that the number 9 would go to Angel Di Maria or possibly Edinson Cavani – Juan Cuadrado may be an outside bet for it. Cuadrado may prefer the no.7 but we all think that this one is reserved for Arturo Vidal.

If Vidal doesn’t arrive perhaps Daley Blind will take the 7 or the number 5. But we feel that Marcos Rojo looks ever more likely to wear this number at Manchester United this season.

We hope, for the sake of the Manchester United faithful, that all three are filled by September. Because, with three more top players coming in United can have a proper tilt at the title.

United fans: who would you like to see wearing those shirts numbers?

Rumour has it that its Charlton at 9. Martin Buchan at 5, and willie morgan at 7. United act 2nd rate, dithering with just days to go to kick off.Woodward will then resurface and say we were in for Kroos Cavani vidal etc.Its unprofessional tedious. It will see us finish 7th or lower again!!
