First signing close for United – reports

News broke over the weekend that Manchester United’s legendary left back Patrice Evra will probably leave the club at the end of the season.

The Guardian wrote:

Patrice Evra is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season and the left-back is considering a move abroad.

While the United vice-captain is yet to make a final decision, Evra is out of contract at the end of June and the club have so far not offered him a deal.

Ever since David Moyes became the Manchester United manager there has been fierce speculation about the signing of a new left back. If there is any substance to these tales then we know that David Moyes has obviously identified this position as needing immediate attention.

Evra has been a wonderful servant to the club but, despite his continued threat going forward, he has been caught out more frequently in his defensive duties this season. Speculation is intensified by the day that Manchester United will make a loan move for Real Madrid’s left back Fabio Coentrao in January.

The 25-year-old has made just a handful of starts in Spain this season and is apparently desperate for a move to get some playing time before the World Cup.

The Telegraph reported last night:

Manchester United manager David Moyes is still in talks to bring Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao to Old Trafford on loan for the rest of the season.

It is understood that Jorge Mendes, the Portuguese agent who has close links with United, has told the club that Coentrao, 25, is extremely keen to revive a loan move that collapsed on transfer deadline day last summer.

Whether this deal is with a view to a permanent move in the summer remains to be seen. The ideal scenario would be for Luke Shaw to come in in the summer and, to that end, Manchester United fans will hope that there have been negotiations with the south coast club.

But, for now, Coentrao will bring some added depth to the squad and can also operate down the left wing if United are struggling in that area.

Let’s have another look at the lad in action.
