Understated class

However well Manchester United do in the transfer market in the remainder of the window you would imagine that the central midfield area will get further embellished at last.

Sir Alex Ferguson was very prudent in the transfer market and clearly didn’t want to spend on players who weren’t deserving of the shirt. He’d rather not spend than buy over-priced mediocrity.

But that policy has left a creative and physical deficit in that area of the park.

Louis van Gaal will want to add a dynamo to compliment Ander Herrera in his new look midfield.

Arturo Vidal looks like the best option, but another player has today been mentioned in relation to a possible move.

Argentinian midfielder Enzo Perez was supposedly close to deal with Valencia but Manchester United have reportedly made a last-minute bid to sign the Latin American player.

The Daily Star says:

MANCHESTER UNITED have lodged a late bid to snatch Benfica’s Enzo Perez away from the grasp of Valencia.

Benfica made it clear they wouldn’t let the 28-year-old go for less than his release clause and before Moyes got the chance to launch a raid this summer he was given the axe.

But United appear to be undeterred and have decided to offer the asking price as they continue to splash the cash this summer.

Vidal is not going to be easy or cheap to acquire for Manchester United. And Perez represents a really solid alternative. At 28 years of age he’s been one of Argentina’s better performers in The World Cup when he has played.

He likes to keep things simple, is highly mobile and puts in a proper shift every time he plays. Like Javier Mascherano, he’s a really hard working, tenacious competitor.

He’s also got the sort of technique that would you associate with an Argentinian player. £24 million is always quite a lot to pay for a 28-year-old but this guy could offer a quick fix to Manchester United’s midfield problems.

Let’s see some of his highlights. Manchester United fans: would you be disappointed if you missed out on Vidal and got Perez instead?
