Manchester United: How times change – only one striker now safe from the axe

Just a couple of months ago the future of Wayne Rooney was highly uncertain. With Jose Mourinho wooing the England striker on an almost daily basis it seemed inevitable that Manchester United’s unhappy talisman would be on his way in January.

But in a classic example of how quickly things change in football, you would have to say that he is now the only Manchester United striker who is guaranteed a future at the club.

From where we are sitting Chicharito seems set for a move. He’s put in a good shift for Manchester United and has a lot of fans at the club. But he has never fulfilled his potential after his unbelievable debut season and he seems unhappy to play the role of super sub at Manchester United in the long term.

UNITED TARGET KEEN ON ENGLAND RETURN

RvP is not having a great time of it at the moment and, after a stop start season for the number one strike partnership at Old Trafford, you have to seriously question whether there is a future for RvP and Rooney in the same team. We would like to see them work at it because top players should be able to play together, however similar. But, at 30 years of age, Manchester United may in fact look to cash in for some youth and raw pace.

Danny Welbeck is a Manchester lad and you would imagine that he would want to stay. But at 24, and with his England place in doubt, he too may decide that he no longer wants to play second fiddle to the top boys.

Whatever happens this summer, the most encouraging news for Manchester United fans is that the best striker of the lot – Wayne Rooney – is staying at Old Trafford.
