Manchester United shock favourites to sign midfield general – new Keano?

New keano?

Even before September 2013 was into its second week many Manchester United fans were questioning the wisdom of appointing David Moyes. His decision to buy Marouane Fellaini for just a few million shy of a club record left the faithful concerned.

Neither inspired the team and, as we know, one has already left. And soccersweep would be surprised if Fellaini remained at the club beyond this summer. He really did have a dreadful time for Manchester United last season.

We often wonder how different things would have been if Manchester United had signed Roberto Martinez and James McCarthy in instead of Moyes and Fellaini.

Martinez has done an inspirational job at Everton and really looks like a top manager in the making.

The canny Spaniard replaced Fellaini with the excellent James McCarthy – a highly mobile and athletic box to box midfielder who has comfortably been the better performer of the two this season.

The player seems happy at Goodison and Martinez will not want to get rid a player who has such a good debut season at the club.

But Manchester United desperately need quality in the middle of the park and they are, somewhat surprisingly, clear favourites with SkyBet to sign McCarthy this summer at odds of 5/2.

Although born in Scotland the Republic of Ireland international would draw immediate comparisons with Manchester United’s legendary captain Roy Keane if he joined the club. Both highly efficient and dominant football players but James McCarthy seems to have a slightly calmer temperament to the Republic of Ireland assistant manager.

Whether he is quite good enough to fill the void in the Manchester United midfield is debatable but he still has time to improve at 23.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Manchester United fans – keen?
