Record Bid Reported: Manchester United now red hot bookie favourites to sign mercurial forward

Worth it?

We are now at the business end of the transfer window and despite Manchester United fumbling around the market for the last few years, we do still hold out hope that they will do at least one major deal before the end of August.

United’s priority is a combative midfielder and Arturo Vidal would be the number one choice for many.

But rumours persist that Manchester United will make a bid for Argentina winger Angel di Maria.

Indeed, The Metro reports on Friday afternoon that United have now made a bid of £55m for the player.

Manchester United have made an offer for Angel Di Maria and are now waiting on a response from Real Madrid.

Fox Sports pundit Christian Martin revealed the news on Twitter, with the offer thought to be in the region of £55million.

That offer, if accepted, would of course smash Manchester United’s current transfer record – £37m for Juan Mata – into pieces.

And since PSG declared themselves out of the running Manchester United’s odds on signing the player have tumbled. Skybet now have the club as clear favourites to sign the player this summer, if he does move from Real Madrid – which looks exceedingly likely considering the signings that the Spanish giants have made – at odds of 1/1.

It seems now that the player will go to whichever club can afford him – and there aren’t many. If PSG are scoffing at his price then Real Madrid may be in trouble.

Di Maria may not be the sort of player that could do a job as wingback so he would have to play up front in Louis van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation. We’d be surprised if United did do a deal at this stage.

Manchester United fans: do you think Di Maria would represent value for money?
