Manchester United: Di Maria medical today, these 2 next – report

After such a disappointing window so far Manchester United fans won’t be counting their chickens just yet.

But everything now seems to point to a massive deal for Angel di Maria, who Sky Sports reckon will arrive today for his medical at Manchester United. They say:

Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria will fly in this lunchtime to undergo a medical ahead of his British record £63.9m move to Manchester United.

If the deal goes through it will smash United’s transfer record which was last broken in January with the £37m signing of Juan Mata from Chelsea.

With gaping holes in the midfield and defence some may question the need for such an expensive addition. But Di Maria can be a big catalyst for a world-class strike force which has been starved of quality service from the wide areas for the last couple of years.

After the performance against Sunderland some would say that the need for midfielders is even greater than for defenders right now. In the absence of Herrera and Carrick, Fletcher and particularly Cleverley were frighteningly bad.

With concerns that Herrera could be out for a while and Carrick, at 33, always taking time to get back into his stride after injury, Manchester United must surely invest in their midfield over the next 8 days.

Van Gaal spoke of Vidal after the game on Sunday but weekend reports suggest that United will bring in Daley Blind and Nigel De Jong this week.

Manchester United close in on Daley Blind and Nigel de Jong transfer deals

While Vidal would represent the best case scenario – twinned with the arrival of Di Maria it would be a massive boost for United – the signings of De Jong and Blind would add desperately needed quality and mobility to an area of Manchester United’s squad which is crying out of fresh ideas.

While Blind is seen, primarily, as a defender he would be a much better option in midfield than United currently have. De Jong is also a solid performer.

If Blind and De Jong arrive, but United fail to land Vidal, expect Kevin Strootman to join the club in January.

Manchester United fans will still be holding hope that the A-list talents of Arturo Vidal can be added to the team after the excellent breakthrough with Di Maria. Watch this space for more.
