Manchester United: Chicharito to start?

Surprise inclusion

The mere notion of Wayne Rooney playing at all tonight is an absolute blessing for Manchester United.

After sustaining a toe injury last week he could easily have been ruled out of this season defining fixture against Bayern Munich.

Beyond that the question is where best to play him this evening.

Despite an excellent performance in general Danny Welbeck’s profligacy in front of goal last week could prove very costly in retrospect. So Manchester United need someone to make best use of the few opportunities that they may get in this leg. In a match with chances at a premium you would surely want Rooney as your finisher ahead of any other available player.

But if he does play up top then you lose his passing ability from the hole and also his capacity to track back and defend. Against Bayern Munich these qualities will be crucial for Manchester United.

What price then a start for Javier Hernandez? He’s in really good form after a great performance at the weekend and is arguably a far better finisher than Danny Welbeck.

We would definitely have Danny in the side but out wide on the left in order to utilise his pace down the line and to help out his full back – he’s great at both duties. Welbeck is a tireless worker and has a wide range of qualities, but finishing is not chief amongst them, and if one big chance came tonight most would prefer it to fall to Rooney or Chicharito.

If Chichcarito has failings his first touch could, at times, be better and he doesn’t provide much of a physical presence up front. But he could offer the sort of pace that will be crucial on the counter for Manchester United tonight. Hernandez loves to exploit the space in behind opposition defenders.

Manchester United fans – who would you pick up top for United tonight?
