The Best

If we could select one footballer for Manchester United, who is mildly gettable, it would have to be this guy. We have said it before, one day Ross Barkley will leave his club, and whoever gets him is going to be the dominant team in English football for the best part of the following decade.

Because Barkley is the sort of game changer who is perfect for The Premier League – very much the next Wayne Rooney in terms of effectiveness if not position.

His boss Roberto Martinez has moved to cool down the transfer talk again today amid apparent interest from some of the EPL big boys:

Barkley signed a new four year deal at Everton in the summer but the speculation over his future won’t go away with neighbours Liverpool and Manchester United reported to be interested, too.

Martinez said: “I don’t think it is easy to get footballers like John Stones and Ross Barkley. I think as English players they are phenomenal footballers and you are going to get that.

“We are a club which does not have to sell. We have gone past that period and the football club is in a fantastic moment financially. Everything will be football decisions.

We think that Barkley will stay at his club for a while yet. He loves it there and is settled. But unless The Toffees can command regular Champions League football then it’s surely only a matter of time before the lad gets itchy feet because his talent is destined for the biggest stage of all.

There has been talk this week of how City will replace Yaya Toure. This is perhaps the only guy that could comfortably step into those shoes. At United, he could do a marvellous job anywhere in the midfield or behind the striker, giving the whole team more speed and purpose. And if Liverpool could somehow get their hands on him they would soon forget all about Luis.

In reality this move isn’t going to happen any time soon. But expect intense speculation again with every transfer window. Because Barkley is going to the very top.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: perfect signing?

I’d rather he went to a big club, like Man City
