Manchester United: 5 Massive learnings from West Ham

Mata, Kags and Roo clicked

Talking points from Manchester United’s defeat of West Ham at the weekend.

Wayne Rooney is captain in waiting – He took the armband for the West Ham clash with Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand absent. And, by way of a job application, he used the game to score one of the best goals you will ever see. There have been some sensational goals in the league this season – even this weekend Norwich’s Alexander Tettey scored a sublime goal – but this one surely gets strike of the season. Is there any real debate? If the brilliant Wayne Rooney isn’t made captain of Manchester United next season I’ll eat my hat.

Kagawa has to play – He transformed the team from clunky and workmanlike to slick and supremely ruthless on the counter. This is Manchester United how we remember them. It’s ridiculous that Kagawa has spent so much of the season warming the bench. He’s pure quality.

RvP – It still seems inconceivable that Manchester United will let RvP leave. but sometimes the great managers have to make tough decisions for the good of the whole team. Manchester United finally resembled a fluid side again on Saturday – the shape was better with Rooney leading the line. Perhaps RvP will be sacrificed after all.

Mata – Another reason why RvP could go. Because Mata comes alive in a central position. We think that he could actually play centre midfield but David Moyes seems loathe to put him there. What is for sure is that Mata is totally wasted out wide. He was superb on Saturday playing, loosely, as Manchester United’s number 10.

Best centre backs – Michael Carrick played really well as emergency centre back but the team still missed Rio’s composure. Ferdinand was superb on Wednesday and made it so much easier for Manchester United to build attacks with his awesome passing out of defence. He and Jones are a really good partnership and will be crucial to Manchester United’s season end.
