Liverpool

Liverpool: Two powerful internationals linked – Rodgers could look to bolster squad early but is this the sublime and the ridiculous?

Superstar alert

There is no argument about whether Ross Barkley would be good enough for Liverpool. Whether they could get him is an entirely different matter.

Everton’s current situation is so good that they may well be able to hold onto him for at least a few years yet.

But that won’t stop the very biggest clubs in the world cooing over one of the very finest players in this league – regardless of age. Those suitors reportedly include Liverpool.

But the idea of him joining Liverpool does seem pretty far-fetched. A brilliant midfielder who could totally take the baton from Steven Gerrard in the offensive and/or defensive parts of the midfield. Like Wayne Rooney this guy could do himself justice anywhere on the pitch.

But he loves his club and this would surely preclude any transfer – nevermind one to Liverpool.

Giant hurdles aside, if Liverpool could theoretically sign the player you’re talking about someone who could take the club from title pretenders to serial trophy winners again.

He’s got drive, athleticism, goals in him and a mercurial football instinct – that penchant for the unpredictable which is only found amongst the very best. He’s also a fierce competitor.

If we had one pick of a midfielder from The Premier League – one only – we would pick Barkley. He’s that good. Not yet as good as Yaya Toure but has the potential to be. And 10 plus years to find out. But we would be absolutely amazed if he joined Liverpool this summer or any summer.

The Ross Barkley rumour comes on the back the quotes from West Ham’s Mohamed Diamé who, this week, has openly stated his desire to play at the top and also talked about Liverpool’s potential interest. He said this week:

‘Overall, my season has been okay, although I think it is not up to last season. I started badly, but gradually I got my bearings.

‘Liverpool? I can’t tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season. But I think my name is still on their wanted list.

We really like Diame. He’s a powerful presence with really good feet and a good shot on him. But Liverpool two years ago is very different to how the side looks now. Would Diame still be a worthwhile asset to Liverpool? Well he’d be worth a punt if the main targets went elsewhere.
