Liverpool scout technical genius – star who could be subject of a summer transfer tug of war – according to report

Strangely enough Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’s transfer policy is still questioned by some. All managers buy the odd stinker and players like Cissokho, Luis Alberto and Borini haven’t done the business.

But for a club to sign players like Coutinho and Sturridge for relatively small amounts you have to look at Liverpool as one of the canniest operators in the market right now. These two are now among the best players in the league and Rodgers snatched them from under the noses of the bigger spenders.

So when Rodgers is said to be interested in players now we think others managers sit up and take notice. The Guardian today reports that Liverpool are monitoring Serbian international Lazar Markovic:

That’s not all Brendan has been doing though – he had a pair of eyes (someone else’s – he doesn’t have a spare set of his own … ) watching Benfica’s Lazar Markovic against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League

The 20-year-old forward/winger only joined Benfica last year and has scored five goals in 23 league appearances for them. He got player of the month in Portugal in Ferbruary of this year.

A young international, with 10 caps for his country, he made his name at Partisan Belgrade where he spent the first two years of his senior professional career from 2011.

Markovic has also been the subject of reported interest from Chelsea and Tottenham and, when you see this guy gliding across the pitch with the ball, it’s easy to understand why – he could become a top player. He’s got a lovely first touch, genuine pace and a mercurial manner about him.

But flair players like this often flatter to deceive and struggle for end product – that’s how you really gauge the quality. There is still room for improvement, in these terms, but Markovic is already a genuine threat.

Let’s have a look at him in action. Liverpool fans – would Markovic get in to the first team?
