Liverpool: Negotiations ‘under way’ for signing

Liverpool have been linked for some time to Derby County midfielder Will Hughes. It looked as if a deal would be done a while back but it’s gone a little stale. Nevertheless Liverpool will clearly have plans afoot in a long term attempt to offset the eventual departure of Steven Gerrard.

But, as we have seen with Paul Scholes at Manchester United, the theory behind replacing a great can be very different to the reality. The fact is that the Liverpool captain is a goalscoring midfielder – these players are so rare that they are worth their weight in diamonds.

Today’s transfer tittle tattle suggests that Liverpool may well be adding such a player to their ranks in January. The Metro today states:

Liverpool are closing in on Norway’s rising star Valon Berisha, with negotiations reportedly under way already.

The Red Bull Salzburg midfielder has been monitored by the Reds for some time and scouts were there for both a friendly win over Bayern Munich last weekend and last month’s league victory against Austria Wien.

The report goes on to suggest that, rather conveniently, ex-Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier happens to be global sports director at Salzburg.

Anyway, the player is threatening to become a real goal scoring gem. Still just 20 years of age, he’s regularly been banging in the goals, with 9 in 48 games for Salzburg and another 15 goals at previous clubs, during his fledgling career. He’s also turned out for the Norway senior side on 11 occasions.

We aren’t suggesting that this guy is necessarily the successor to Steven Gerrard. He may not even come close to replicating the success of Liverpool’s captain marvel. But with Hughes on the radar and Berisha linked, Liverpool are seemingly looking at players who can add goals from midfield.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Liverpool fans would this represent a good investment or are you looking for more high-profile arrivals?

We will most likely finish 7th now that Lucas is injured as liverpool continue to waste the transfer window and look like only signing that Brazilian Nobodinho. Still maybe Gerrard will get injured again with a bit of luck; as without him failing to do his bit in a high tempo pressing style, we have played our best football. Much as it pains me as Stevie has been fantastic but with the style Rodgers plays if one player doesn’t track back and press relentlessly the system fails and he is the worst culprit for this, especially when he loses the ball high up the field!
