Defence must be a priority for Liverpool this summer. After flying forward at every given opportunity in the last campaign they were left open at the back too often for comfort. This was, of course, partly a bi-product of having such an attacking formation but there is room for improvement over the summer in terms of the playing roster too.

The Guardian’s main story Thursday afternoon is that Liverpool have made a bid for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno:

Liverpool have formalised their interest in Alberto Moreno with an offer worth £16.2m (€20m) for the Sevilla left-back, according to reports in Spain.

Brendan Rodgers has prioritised a new left-back for this summer and having considered an approach to Chelsea for Ryan Bertrand, has made Moreno his preferred option. The 21-year-old enjoyed a fine season with the Europa League winners and has been included in Spain’s preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup.

Meanwhile another seemingly long term Liverpool target could be closer to a move to Anfield with The Metro reporting that Xherdan Shaqiri says he could leave Bayern Munchen this summer after limited playing opportunities in a stupendously competitive squad.

Liverpool are set to make a bid for Xherdan Shaqiri after he admitted he could quit Bayern Munich and move to the Premier League this summer.

‘I don’t want to go through another year like this,’ he said.

‘We will see what happens, but I only want to play for a major club – the Champions League is important to me.

‘England would be an option. If I were to leave Bayern, it will be for a foreign club. But it will have to be a club challenging for the title.’

The 22 year old is a super player and has been really unlucky not to play more for his current club since he signed in 2012 for 11.6m Euros.

And that’s not the end of the Liverpool rumours today as Talksport reports that Rodgers may also bid for a veteran midfielder:

Liverpool are ready to reignite their long-term interest in Mali star Seydou Keita with his future at Valencia in doubt.

The Reds tried to snare the 34-year-old former Barcelona midfielder back in January but he opted to sign a six-month deal with Valencia.

And Liverpool could be about to launch an audacious bid to bring him to Anfield, four months after he snubbed them for Spain.

Let’s take a look at Moreno in action. Liverpool fans: is Moreno the perfect solution or will this signing further limit the opportunities for the promising homegrown talent?
