Liverpool: Any truth in rumours from Italy?

It’s that time of the year when nails are bitten, hopes are raised then suddenly dashed and red herrings litter your football life. It already feels like an age since the season ended and, while EURO 2012 provided nominal entertainment, it doesn’t really compare to proper football does it?

Hopefully, Liverpool will sign two players of real pedigree this summer and give the Anfield faithful reason for excitement come the new season.

There is a steady flow of speculation that Brendan Rodgers could have made a bid for classy Fiorentina schemer Stevan Jovetic.

The director of the Italian club has accepted that the much sought after Montenegrin may leave for the right price and Corriere Dello Sport reckons that The Reds have already made a bid of 22m Euros. Other media outlets are running with the story that Arsenal also want the hitman as they continue to stockpile strikers. But considering The Gunners’ recent transfer policy, it seems more likely that Liverpool would pay the sort of money required to sign the youngster.

Even at 22 Jovetic has already accomplished much and has made a big impression on Serie A as a second striker for Fiorentina. His goalscoring record isn’t bad – he has 22 goals in some 80 games for club and a ratio of nearly a goal every 2 games for country. But he is much more than a fox in the box. His dribbling skills, vision and close control have lead to comparisons being made in Italy with the great Roberto Baggio.

He is going to be a top player, if he isn’t already, but the question is whether Liverpool would prioritise the signing of a second striker when they already have Luis Suarez. It’s possible that they could both play in a 4-3-3 or another more modern formation and there is always the school of thought that when a top player becomes available then you should try to get him regardless of position. He looks fairly adaptable and would surely increase the overall quality of the squad. Technically he is excellent and many fans would be excited by the prospect of seeing Jovetic in the red of Liverpool.

So do you want to see Jovetic at Anfield?

I would truly love him at Liverpool but I would have to be realistic and say it is probably not Jovetic but rather Borrini. Jovetic is really the calibre of player we should be looking to sign. We need players with technique and are comfortable with the ball at there feet if we want to play the ‘tiki taka’ system.
