La Liga target responds to Manchester United interest

It must be a pretty slow news day when we are talking about Manchester United and Cesc Fabregas once more. The North West giants publicly declared their interest in Barcelona midfielder in the summer in a move which, at the time, seemed to illustrate confidence in signing the player.

As it turned out, ex-Arsenal man Fabregas was yet another element of a damp squib of a summer for Manchester United in the transfer market.

Many Manchester United fans will of course remember the statement that he delivered straight after the window closed in August. He said in September:

‘I wouldn’t have gone for double or even triple the amount I earn now. I paid out of my own pocket to move to Barca – I earned more at Arsenal.

‘United did not speak with me, and I’ve always said the only thing on my mind is Barca.’

But he has recently spoken to the BBC about the move and, in so doing, sent a new set of tantalising headlines around t’internet.
When asked about the move he told Football Focus:

“I do follow the Premier League a lot and it’s always flattering when a club like Manchester United talks very well about you and you can see they want you,”

“But I’m going through an amazing moment [at Barcelona] now.”

As neutrals, we have to say that we were very keen to see him sign for Manchester United. Having enjoyed him so much at Arsenal we imagined The Premier League to be a better place with him in it – a player who looks like he’s got all the time in the world on the ball. A player who looks like he’s wearing slippers, such is that first touch.

And what a season he is having in Spain. He’s got 13 goals and 13 assists in 36 games for Barcelona this season. Sure, it’s arguably a bit of a mickey mouse league, but those figures are up there with the best.

If there was any chance of Fabregas signing for Manchester United in the summer, we think that it has disappeared now. If he does leave Barcelona, it will surely be to return to recently re-minted Arsenal.
