Is this why Manchester United haven’t signed Cavani?

If reports are to be believed Manchester United are concentrating mainly on the midfield and defence ahead of the new season.

With frailties in both areas big money could well be spent before September.

But Manchester United been strangely quiet on the transfer front with regards forward players.

Despite a transfer speculation frenzy this summer, the only two mooted arrivals in that department have been Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria.

With the future of Javier Hernandez up in the air you would imagine that Manchester United would maintain a serious interest in one of these two players, if available.

But there hasn’t been an official bid for either and perhaps this is the reason why.

Last night Manchester United’s 18 year old striker James Wilson scored four goals for the U21s against Manchester City to show that he’s a proper marksmen in the making.

His brilliant two-goal senior debut at the back end of last season clearly hasn’t gone to his head. He has since knuckled down and is continuing to improve at a rapid pace.

Fergie always maintained that if you’re good enough you’re old enough and this guy may be hard to hold back for too much longer. He’s a proper fox in the box and, dare we say, he moves like a young Paul Scholes.

Really good young players tend to go out on loan from Manchester United to gain first-team experience. But perhaps James Wilson has done enough to be considered United’s fourth choice keeper if Chicharito does move on.

It seems outlandish to suggest that United would hold off on Cavani due to Wilson. But Manchester United are already strong up top and we are yet to witness LvG’s famed use of young stars in competitive games. Perhaps Wilson will be the first.

Let’s have a look at some of those goals. Manchester United fans: is Wilson good enough for a role in the first team this season?

James Wilson didn’t travel on the United tour of the USA as I believe he sustained a hand/wrist injury and was withdrawn.
