How Manchester United could spend £138m in next 4 weeks
It’s been a really positive preseason for Manchester United and the root and branch changes in playing personnel, that some had believed necessary, probably won’t be required on this evidence.
Manchester United beat the champions of Europe aswell as their arch rivals Liverpool. United were easily the most competent team in the competition and the new formation is working beautifully.
But money will surely be spent. And here’s how we think it needs spending, with all of the below linked to United of late (click names for transfer links to United).
Juan Cuadrado – he won’t be easy to acquire, but top players generally aren’t. With Barcelona sniffing around the brilliant Colombian may prefer Spain. But Manchester United could well be in a position to offer Fiorentina more cash for the player. He would be a sensational addition at right wingback. The Guardian says he would cost £31m.
Mats Hummels – the media has been banging on about this deal for a good couple of months now but it does make a lot of sense for Manchester United. The current defence did pretty well in America but Manchester United could really use a world class addition in the heart of their defence. Recent reports suggested Hummels had agreed to join in a £16m deal but Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp scoffed at the price.
Thomas Vermaelen – Although Barcelona are supposedly interestd in this guy too we think he could well be destined for a Manchester United side that will likely need more than one new arrival in the centre back positions. £10m is the mooted price for this dude.
Arturo Vidal – The latest reports show Vidal having fun with his Juventus team mates in what much of the press has seen as a portent of his desire to stay in Italy. The longer it drags on the less likely a mega move, for around £47m seems. Will Manchester United hold out for Strootman?
Daley Blind – Luke Shaw has been lovely to watch in preseason. He’s going to be a world class player. But he will need some help. If Ashley Young isn’t deemed sufficient then Daley Blind would be a super addition at around £17m.
