Good Business: How are the Manchester United exports doing?

Hit and Miss

Manchester United had a dramatic summer in the market, not only bringing in £150m worth of talent but also shedding a dozen stars. But did United get it right? Let’s have a look at the progress of the big departures:

Danny Welbeck – there was outrage in certain quarters when he was allowed to leave Manchester United and everyone went nuts when he scored a hat trick against a dodgy Turkish side. But we think that a truer gauge of his effectiveness as a striker came against Chelsea four days later.

For our money, Welbeck is and always will be a decent, hard-working player but never a prolific striker. GOOD BUSINESS

Tom Cleverley – He was awful at Manchester United and hasn’t made much of an impression at Aston Villa so far. Hopefully he does enough this term for them to want him permanently. GOOD BUSINESS

Chicharito – He scored a blinder and also missed a sitter. Started against minnows Ludogorets in The Champions League and offered nothing, before being replaced by Benzema, who scored the winner. You always know that you will get a shift from Hernandez but he isn’t being missed at Manchester United. GOOD BUSINESS

Nani – He’s performed more consistently since returning to Portugal but he illustrated yet again, in Sporting’s Champions League game against Chelsea, that he’s not a top level player. Hopefully Lisbon will take him off United’s hands permanently. GOOD BUSINESS

Shinji Kagawa – He’s played really well since his return to Dortmund, scoring and assisting several goals. But, while we always knew he was a talented lad, he just never made his mark at United or forced his way into the team. He would have the same problem now if he had stayed – there is no obvious place in the Manchester United side for the lad. GOOD BUSINESS

Manchester United fans: do you agree that Louis not only bought brilliantly this summer but also got rid of the right players?
